second american edition Elizabeth Heyrick (1789-1831) joined the Society of Friends following her husband's death. She refused to accept the national Anti-Slavery Society's policy of gradual abolition, and instead published the present pamphlet in 1824. She quickly came under fire from the Anti-Slavery Society which tried to suppress the pamphlet. Even William Wilberforce, a staunch anti-slavery man, but savvy politician tried to convince her to change her policy. Heyrick, together with Lucy Townsend, Mary Lloyd, Sarah Wedgwood and Sophia Sturge, broke away from the Society to form the Birmingham Ladies Society for the Relief of Negro Slaves. Heyrick's pamphlet quickly found supporters on the other side of the Atlantic, and this New York printing appeared one year later.
